The Mazda 767B

LYNNWOOD, WA - Doug’s Lynnwood Mazda has been in operation since 1972, and to commemorate the opening of its new facility, Mazda Motor of America sent over a pretty cool piece of history for the showroom thanks to Jon the general manager and my good friend Wayne who’s been supporting the transition to the new facility. I had the pleasure of photographing the roll-in and a few composites in the showroom. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a tech so excited to drive a cramped vehicle that could not even be turned on!
The 767B is the predecessor to the legendary 787B that won the 1991 24 Hours of Le Mans while driven by Johnny Herbert (there’s a pretty good story regarding dehydration and some “dodgy spaghetti” that almost cost Herbert the race… it’s on Wikipedia so it must be true, right?). In it’s own right, two 767Bs raced Le Mans in 1988 and 1989. Although the 767Bs only reached 9th and 7th place in the 1989 Le Mans, they proved to be quite reliable and free of major mechanical failures in competition.
