ENUMCLAW WA - A little less rain and a lot more snow for AVANTS’ second off road event. This time, we met about an hour Southeast of Seattle, before heading up into the hills to find deeper snow. Turnout is always great, with a pretty wide range of vehicles and skill levels participating. This trip was split into two groups with one doing a short and muddy warmup coarse while the other discussed vehicle recovery best practices. Special thanks to Warn and Masterpull for providing gear, demos, and general knowledge.
The real fun began once the two groups reconvened for a cruise up some snowy single track. As we went higher in elevation, fresh snow began to come down and drivers got to apply their academic concepts. Keeping aired down tires centered on the single-track path was necessary to avoid possibly sinking into three or more feet of snow on either side of the road. Accidents happen however, and a few drivers got the opportunity to practice placing traction boards, static recovery, and plenty of digging.
The sun was setting as we came back down to Enumclaw. As we all aired up tires for the drive on pavement home, it was all smiles: no one lost, nothing broken, but plenty of lessons learned and friends made.
