Oregon Trail Rally 2018

Oregon Trail Rally 2018

The Oregon Trail Rally is an annual tradition for Sara and I. Every April, we team up with a few friends and head down to Portland and then Dufur, Oregon for a very dusty weekend. This year was particularly exciting for me thanks to some really cool participants.

Firstly, two fellow photographers I know were co-driving for this event. I'm constantly amazed by the range of skills and passions people develop and how hard they work to be successful in multiple areas. I also had an understandable bias for the local teams. Rally is still fairly young as a national sport in the U.S., but the PNW has quite a bit of history. There is a strong community here, and even a number of families with multiple generations racing on dirt.

The second competitor that made this rally special, was seeing Chris Atkinson race so close to home. I discovered rally racing in grade school and was obsessed with WRC in highschool. At the time, Atkinson was a young Aussie taking on the legends of that time period (Loeb, Gronholm, and Solberg). Atkinson was by far my favorite driver then, and it was great seeing him still competing today.
